Nigeria after 50 years of independence

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the independence of several African countries, and a number of good articles have been published to coincide with this event. The latest is this article from the BBC. The article discusses the country’s successes and failures, including perhaps its most remarkable feat, remaining intact as a single country.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera continues its series Africa: States of Independence with a segment on Senegal.

  1. I thought it would be appropriate to share this since we are speaking about the Democratic Republic of Congo in class. I read a CNN article (link below) about a famous American actress who visited the region:

Ashley Judd traveled to eastern Congo, her second time to the region, with John Prendergast of the Enough Project at the Center for American Progress. Since 2003, Judd has traveled the world visiting vulnerable populations, especially girls and women, focusing on grass roots solutions that transform and save lives. Among other affiliations, she serves on the board of Population Services International. For more information on the campaign against conflict minerals, visit raisehopeforcongo.org.
