Exams

There will be no exams in Geog 101. Your entire grade will come from map quizzes, online assignments, and occasional in-class pop quizzes on the readings.

Assignments

The questions in the assignments will focus on your understanding of the ideas and principles you have learned you have learned in class and from the text, rather than questions which simply test your knowledge of factual details. In putting together exam questions, however, I will assume that you have read and are familiar with the material in the textbook, whether or not we have covered it in class. Usually, 20 – 30 percent of the material in the assignments will be taken solely from the text (which means that you probably won’t be able to answer these questions unless you are familiar with the material in the text.)

Assignments will be open-book, and they will be posted on Canvas so that you can take them anywhere. You will need to use your atlas and textbook in answering exam questions; in addition, I may make use of other resources such as census data, Google Earth images, and photographs in some of the questions.

Please note that you will have a limited amount of time to complete the assignments. This means that if you are not familiar with the material in the text and other readings before you begin the assignment, you may not have time to find it all So please don’t be lulled into thinking that, because the assignments are open-book, you don’t need to complete the required readings beforehand!
