Your final grade for Geog 101 will consist of the following.
In-class Quizzes: 35 percent
This includes map quizzes and periodic in-class pop quizzes on news and readings For more information, visit the Quizzes page on this site. (I will give pop quizzes in class if it appears that members of the class need some persuasion in keeping up with the required readings. But if it’s clear from class and online discussions that you are keeping up with the readings, pop quizzes will be less likely.)
Online Assignments: 65 percent
You will complete between eight and twelve online assignments during the course of the semester, and your grades for these will comprise 65 percent of your final grade for the course. Assignments will be open-book, and will assess you understanding of the ideas and concepts of the course rather than your ability to memorize and regurgitate facts. (Note that Canvas uses the word “quiz” to refer to online assignments. For our purposes, any assessments posted online count toward the 65 percent of your grade that comes from assignments.) The weighting each assignment grade receives depends on the number of points it is worth; this means that a 60 point assignment counts twice as much as a 30 point assignment.
Extra Credit: Up to 10 percent
You may earn up to 10 percent by completing extra credit assignments. For more information, please take a look at the Extra Credit page on this site.
*Assignments will be posted on Canvas, and their due dates and times listed on the Course calendar. I will give pop quizzes in class if it appears that members of the class need some persuasion in keeping up with the required readings.
